Pitchline Engineering

Gear Cutting in South Africa

Two hobbing and three shaping machines cut spur and helical gears, with blanks turned and bores ground in the same factory.
Gear Cutting at Pitchline Engineering

Pitchline cuts replacement and production gears for gearboxes, conveyors, pumps and agricultural drives. Because the blank is turned, the teeth cut and the bore or faces ground in one place, a complete gear can be supplied rather than just cut teeth.

Cutters are specific to the Module or Diametral Pitch (DP), so confirm yours with the enquiry and the team will check tooling availability.

Typical work

  • Replacement spur and helical gears for gearboxes and drives
  • Pinions, cluster gears and gear blanks
  • Gears reverse-engineered from a worn sample
  • Conveyor, pump and agricultural drive gears

Gear Cutting questions

What gears can Pitchline cut?

Spur and helical gears on two hobbing machines, and spur gears on three gear shaping machines, plus pinions and gear blanks.

What information is needed to quote a gear?

Module or Diametral Pitch, number of teeth, pressure angle, face width, bore and material — or the worn gear and a drawing.

Can a broken or worn gear be copied?

Yes, provided enough teeth remain to measure the original form. Reverse-engineering replacement gears is regular work.

Can Pitchline make the whole gear?

Yes. The blank is turned, the teeth cut, and bores or faces ground where a close fit is needed, all in the same factory.
